Granite - Granite is a widely occurring igneous rock found in different forms and in many locations around the world. By definition it is an igneous rock with at least 20% quartz content by volume, it is hard and strong and therefore lends itself well for use as a work surface. Because it occurs in so many places around the world it is available in dozens of colours and variants and the colours are often known by many different names. The word granite comes from the latin granum, a grain, in reference to the coarse grained structure that is a normal characteristic. Granite is porous making it prone to staining. To overcome this granite should be sealed at regular intervals (every 12 – 24 months for domestic kitchens)
